A Beginner's Guide to Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is a type of massage that is great for helping relax clients. The way this massage differs from others is through the use of stones. Flat stones that have been heated are placed directly on important and key spots of the body. Your massage therapist will then use the stone to massage that area of the body. Hot stones date back to the ancient times and they were used as a way to heal. The types of stones used are typically river rocks that are made of basalt which is very rich in iron which allows the stones to hold on to the heat. River rocks are smooth on both sides so you never have to worry about a sharp stone or getting cut from the stone. Before the massage, the rocks are placed in an electric heater after being dipped in water. Once the rocks are heated and ready to go, your massage therapist will place them on your back in designated spots.
