What Is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal affective disorder is also known as SAD. It is a form of depression that occurs as the result of seasonal changes. Some of the symptoms of SAD include low energy, depression, difficulty concentrating and suicidal thoughts. SAD typically occurs during the fall and winter. However, some people develop symptoms during the spring and summer months.

Causes Of SAD

Changes in the circadian rhythm can cause SAD. Many people change their routine because of decreased daylight hours. Changes in the routine can cause a disruption in the internal clock. A decrease in serotonin levels can also cause SAD. Reduced sunlight can also cause a drop in serotonin levels.

Fighting SAD With Healthy Living

There are many things that you can do at home to fight SAD. Regular activity is an important part of healthy living. Exercising helps alleviate stress and boost serotonin levels. Even though the weather is cold, you may also want to spend some time outside. The outdoor light can help boost your mood. Additionally, you may want to make a trip to the day spa. A massage and other spa treatments are not only relaxing, but they can help boost your mood. A massage can help reduce anxiety and depression. Massage therapy can also increase serotonin. There was a study done by the University of Miami School Of Medicine that examined the effects that massage therapy had on SAD. The results of the study showed that massages help boost serotonin levels. A study that was done in Taiwan showed similar results. Some people do not want to get spa treatments because they are shy. However, a trip to the day spa may be what you need to fight SAD.
