Essential oils can be very therapeutic to treat digestive disorders. Digestive disorders affect mouth, bowels, stomach and intestines. Relief can be found by using some essential oils. It's important to learn about them and understand which ones are used to treat digestive disorders and how they should be used. Of course, consult your physician and never use essential oils in place of medication without your doctor's advice. Digestive disorders include problems such as diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, ulcers, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bowel disease, stomach aches and nausea. Some can cause more discomfort than others. Essential oils are useful in treating minor digestive problems.

Issues treated well with essential oils

IBS

Lifestyle, diet, and medication are used for IBS management, and essential oils are up and coming as additional tools for coping with IBS. Peppermint oil is used in this case and is usually in the form of enteric-coated capsules. Some studies found peppermint oil to be just as effective as antispasmodic medication.

GERD

With the esophagus and stomach being the first stops along the digestive tract, GERD is not just in the gut. GERD is an indication of digestive upset. It is a more severe form of acid reflux and an indication of either an excess or deficiency of stomach acid. GERD effects come from lifestyle habits, food choices, and bacterial exposure. Ginger essential oils are a great choice for GERD when paired with turmeric essential oil for antioxidant boosting and protective effects. The antioxidant helps protect the stomach wall.

Nausea

Nausea can be mild or severe depending on what's causing it. Sickness, foods, pregnancy and even bad smells can make us nauseous. Lemon essential oil has been said to be effective for treating morning sickness. Combinations of peppermint and ginger are effective too.
