Plant oils have been used in holistic medicine to alleviate symptoms of pain, depression, anxiety, and many other conditions. A plant's essence, or scent, can be extracted from any part of the plant. The resulting oils are then mixed with carrier oils or lotions for application to the body. A day spa generally offers massage therapy and uses different oils to help relax you. The soothing scents of the oils help to dissolve stress which in turn helps ease muscle soreness and stiffness. There are roughly 100 different plant essences. The most common ones used in aromatherapy are: · Lavender · Chamomile · Tea Tree · Sandalwood · Peppermint · Bergamot · Eucalyptus As the name implies, aromatherapy is using the scent of plant oils to soothe your mind and body. Your spa treatment can: · alleviate pain · reduce insomnia · ease stress and anxiety · soothe sore achy joints and muscles · promote restful sleep Essential oils can be used in a diffuser, added to bathwater, or used with a carrier oil or lotion to apply to the skin. Different oils can also be combined for unlimited scents. Do not however use the oils without being diluted, and never take them internally. Have a discussion with your doctor about using essential oils if you have any of the following conditions: · Allergies · Asthma · Epilepsy · High Blood Pressure · Eczema · Psoriasis Some of the possible side effects of essential oils are rash, redness, itching, swelling, and sensitivity to the sun. Sun sensitivity is especially common when using citrus oils. Aromatherapy can also cause headaches if you are sensitive to strong smells. Something else to keep in mind is the use of oils on small children or expectant mothers as the effects are not fully known.
