How About Some Adult Time Out?!
Posted: November 9th, 2016
Parents have been using "time out" as a disciplinary tool for ages. While time out techniques may vary, the goal remains the same. The purpose of a time out is not only punitivebut also constructive. Time outs provide children with a quiet space where they can reflect on their actions. People never really grow out of the need for reflection; in fact, it could be argued that adults need quiet time more than children. The reality of the situation is that life is hectic and stressful. So whether it be a slice of quiet timeor a trip to the day spa, go ahead and give yourself a time out. One of the most popular time out techniques is the classic "go sit by yourself" version. There are several ways to modify the time-out to fit your needs. It may be something as simple as taking a break from stressful situations or overwhelming tasks. Momentarily stepping away from something stressful will not only help you remain calm, it will also give you a much-needed moment to collect your thoughts. While it may seem like a no-brainer, the truth is that many adults require a conscious reminder. Another way to utilize an adult time out is to treat yourself to small luxuries that are just for you. A massage, for instance, is an excellent way to relax and unwind. A massage will also provide a modicum of peace and quiet that is lacking in your day to day life, and allow you a block of uninterrupted "you time". Massage therapy can be found in a variety of locations, such as a day spa or physical therapy office. Massage therapy is different in a spa setting than in a doctor's office, so be sure to consider your specific needs. The spa setting is much more relaxing. The length of the time-out is not important; the point is simply to take an obligatory break free of distractions. Whether in a spa or in your own home is up to you.
