Is Makeup Healthy?

In the old days, makeup was created using heavy oils that clogged pores, led to breakouts, and contained harmful cancer-causing ingredients such as lead and talcum. Today, with the advantage of medical knowledge and science, makeup is much more advanced. It's not only kinder to the skin and feels lightweight, but many of the formulas have been created by industry-leading skin care experts and dermatologists. The use of makeup can be part of a skin care regimen. When choosing makeup, view the process as a way to maintain healthy skin. Look for tinted moisturizers, foundations and powders containing sunscreen that are non-comedogenic (will not clog pores). In addition, those with sensitive skin should search for products containing the words "hypoallergenic" or "suitable for sensitive skin". Mineral-based makeup is a good option for this skin type, as well as for those who suffer from acne. Those with dry or mature skin should look for makeup containing moisturizing ingredients. Cream foundations, blushes, and eyeshadows are great options. If possible, shop for products that are listed as having natural ingredients and are fragrance-free. Some lines are endorsed or recommended by skin care organizations. With a little time spent researching the makeup counter or aisle, it is possible to find items that protect, improve, and maintain healthy skin for years to come.
