Six Ways to Best Manage Stress

Everyone faces stressful situations, whether it be from school, work, family or other responsibilities. But if you are experiencing stress regularly, your body's normal routines may suffer. Chronic stress can also cause serious health problems including mental health issues like depression or anxiety. To avoid the side effects of stress, it is important to schedule some relaxation time into your day. Here are six ways you can manage stress effectively:

1. Regular Exercise

The NIH (National Institutes of Health) reports that at least 30 minutes per day of walking can have positive results for your mood and can reduce stress.

2. Meditation

Put your phone away, find a cozy spot and spend some time meditating in silence. This may be difficult at first, so start out by scheduling just five to ten minutes for total silence. Become aware of what is around you, your body and your breathing.

3. Massage Therapy

There is scientific evidence that a massage treatment can help reduce stress while lowering your heart rate and blood pressure. Having regular massage therapy is recommended for continued stress relief.

4. Relaxing Activities

Set aside time for gentle activities such as yoga or tai chi. Not only can you de-stress with these activities, but you can learn relaxation techniques that you can apply when faced with a stressful situation. Taking the time to go to a day spa is another great way of taking a break from the everyday grind.

5. Getting Enough Sleep

The recommended amount of sleep for adults is at least seven hours per night. Any less than that and it could increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and other chronic diseases.

6. Socializing.

Spending time with friends and family can provide much-needed stress relief when you feel anxious. Let them know what you are going through. Even going to a day spa with a friend can help. If you follow these recommendations, you will be on your way to a happier and healthier life.
