Learn How to Avoid Fungus from Acrylic Nails

Posted: June 26th, 2014

You already know that it is important to take care of your nails. Although many people know this, they neglect proper nail care once they start wearing acrylic nails. If you are suffering from nail fungus then you may experience brittle nails that hurt and tear over time. Your nail technician can alert you to any potential problems and let you know once fungus is beginning to form.

What Causes Nail Fungus?

Acrylic nail fungus grows underneath the acrylic nail and on your actual fingernail. Once the fungus is present, it is easy for it to live and spread because of the moisture and humidity between the layers of acrylic and real nail. It is not impossible to get fungus from improperly cleaned nail tools so it is important to make sure the company you are using has sterilized their equipment thoroughly before using it on your nails. The fungus begins to grow especially when acrylic nails are not put on correctly or they are loose. This loosening allows water to become trapped under the nail and there is no way to get the nail completely dry, unless you take the nail off.

Treatment for Nail Fungus

There is treatment available for nail fungus caused by your acrylic nails. The treatments are fairly simple and do not require any type of doctor visits, unless of course the fungus becomes out of control. One of the first ways to treat your nail fungus is with essential oils. The oils have different properties in them that fight off the fungus and kill it. Scents like lavender are perfect for this and will heal the problem without any side effects. Vinegar is another great solution and works wonders on nail fungus. Simply soak your affected nails in a bath of vinegar for 30 minutes per day. Continue this process until the fungus is completely gone. Lastly, Listerine mouthwash works for nail fungus as well. You can soak your nails in the mouthwash for 30 minutes a day. The chemicals in the mouthwash help kill off the fungus. If the above remedies are not working for your fungus, you will need to visit your doctor. They will be able to prescribe you a medication to kill the bacteria and fungus thriving on your nails.

Identifying Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is fairly easy to identify and most people know once they have it. Some of the symptoms include:
  • Painful nail beds.
  • Painful nails.
  • Soreness and redness around the nail or on the nail.
  • Discolored nails.
  • Pus on the nails.
  • Lines or streaking of the nails.
If you have any questions about the way your local spa handles sterilizing their tools, speak with them. They are used to questions and would rather you ask then stay silent. You can feel confident getting acrylic nails if you know how to properly take care of them. Acrylic nail fungus is not common but it is not uncommon either. The best way to avoid nail fungus altogether is to take care of your nails properly.
