Lymphedema is a problem that can affect the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing excess fluids and fighting infections. When the system is not working properly, you can end up with extra fluid in your body. Most people get secondary lymphoedema, which is caused by a traumatic event.   When you are suffering from this condition, a special massage can be helpful in getting the excess fluid moving and alleviating some of the symptoms. Lymphedema massage therapy or LMT uses a special technique of massage. A typical "massage" may not be the proper way to manage lymphedema.  You should get massage therapy by a licensed massage therapist. They will know how to use compression, light massage, and manual lymph drainage. This will help clear the body of the fluids that are being retained. The therapist will concentrate their gentle massage on the areas that have inadequate flow. This inadequacy is caused by damage to the lymph nodes. The massage will detoxify tissues and aid in reducing the swelling in the affected area.   Managing the symptoms can mean everything to someone suffering from the condition. The excess fluid can stretch the skin, causing pain. It can also cause a breakdown in the skin, causing sores. Furthermore, the fluid can make it difficult to move the affected area and cause a person embarrassment, fatigue, and pain.   Understanding how this special kind of massage is important because you do not want more damage caused to the area. Not having a licensed massage therapist results in you running the risk that you will not gain all the benefits of an appropriate massage. Doing your research will help you manage your symptoms and get the best results.
