Post-Waxing Irritation

There are numerous types of hair waxing available. At one point or another, many individuals see an esthetician for a face wax, bikini and leg wax or back wax. Unfortunately, they may be left with something other than smooth skin. Ingrown hairs, redness, and irritation can occur. Here's what causes this and how it should be treated.

What Causes It And How Long It Lasts

Irritation after waxing is common. It tends to be caused by inflammation. This can occur just from the hair waxing itself, or it can be caused by skin care products or wearing clothing that is too tight fitting immediately after waxing. In addition to irritation, ingrown hair can develop. This occurs when the hair grows back into the skin's surface rather than up out of it. Most inflammation and ingrown hairs are resolved within a few days.

How To Treat It And Help Irritated Skin

Fortunately, post-wax irritation can be treated in several different ways. The day spa used for the waxing may give their clients products to put on the waxed area. A lukewarm shower can also calm the skin. Aloe vera, tea tree oil, and witch hazel can be very beneficial. In order to bring ingrown hairs to the surface, skin care regimens should include putting a heating pad on the affected area for no more than 5 minutes each time. Exfoliating before waxing can help reduce the likelihood of ingrown hair from occurring. In conclusion, it's not uncommon for an individual to get an ingrown hair or deal with irritation after waxing. Fortunately, this doesn't tend to last long and is very treatable. Many individuals don't mind taking the risk of this occurring, as waxing allows them to remain hair free for weeks at a time.
