Protecting Your Skin This Summer: Tips to Beat the Heat

Posted: July 25th, 2014

Summertime usually means lazy days at the pool, grilling on the patio, and a host of other outdoor activities. While most of us look forward to spending time outside, it can wreak havoc on our skin. The following provides skin care tips for keeping our skin protected and looking great.

Sunscreen Tips

Make sure to use a product that has an SPF of at least 15 or higher for sun protection. Many people, however, don't apply enough sunscreen. It's recommended to use about a teaspoon of sunblock for the face and approximately three Tablespoons for the rest of the body. Make sure you reapply often enough throughout the day to keep your skin protected. Even if the sunscreen is waterproof it's a good idea to reapply if you've been in the water for long periods of time.

Protective Clothing

Another option for protecting skin is to wear protective clothing. This doesn't mean you have to be hot and sweaty during the summer. In many tropical regions of the world the locals wear long sleeves and pants on a regular basis. Choose white or other light colors to reflect the sun instead of absorbing the heat. Thin cotton or sheer linen are the best types of material to wear in the summer. Cotton also helps absorb moisture. There are lots of attractive tunics and other long sleeve options that will look great while keeping you cool and offering sun protection.

Caring for Sunburn

In spite of your best efforts you may still end up with a sunburn. Natural aloe is a great remedy for soothing burnt skin. You may want to consult a skin care specialist on the best way to repair damaged skin. Treatments and recommended products may vary depending on skin type.
