The Benefits of Aromatherapy Massage
Posted: November 4th, 2013
There are many benefits of an aromatherapy massage. Aromatherapy is the use of extracted oils from fruits, flowers and herbs to enrich the healing benefits of a massage. The benefits of a massage are pain relief, the reduction of the build-up of fluid, mucus alleviation, improved circulation and concentration, detoxification of the body and enhanced cell metabolism. The addition of aromatherapy oils to a massage enhances the massage in many ways. During a massage, the oils are absorbed through the skin and travel throughout the body. One way the oils are spread is through the blood stream. Another way the oils are absorbed into the body is through the lungs, during inhalation. Inhalation affects the nervous system by way of the olfactory senses, especially the brain and limbic system. The limbic system regulates emotions and has a strong affect on hormones. Once the oils are in the body, they take effect. Depending on the oils or blend of oils, the body will react differently. Aromatherapy oils can increase digestion, warm or cool the body, relieve stress-related illnesses such as insomnia and anxiety, increase or decrease the heart rate, trigger memory, and increase or decrease breathing. Aromatherapy oils can also rebalance hormones. Different oils produce different outcomes. Before an aromatherapy massage is conducted, the recipient and masseuse correspond to determine the oils that are to be used. Once the masseuse is aware of the recipients needs, he or she will prepare the appropriate oils. An example of oils and their effects are as follows: rosemary oil aids in energizing the body whereas vanilla, sweet orange and jasmine produce a relaxed, euphoric experience. Eucalyptus, pine, tea tree and spike lavender are decongestive remedies. Peppermint, marjoram and black pepper target muscle pain and fibromyalgia. Clary sage, rose and geranium assist in regulating hormone production.
