The Top 5 Manicure Myths

Treating yourself to a manicure is an easy and simple pleasure. However, some people may be held back by myths regarding getting this treatment in a salon or spa. Following are some common myths - and the truth behind them. 1. Filing nails aggressively is the best method of nail shaping. Nope. A professional knows how to file your nails properly so they don't peel or break or become misshapen. If you really want to file at home between salon visits, go easy on your nails and use a 180 grit nail file. 2. Organic nail polish is necessary. The truth is, the term 'organic' is not regulated on beauty products. If you want to most natural nail polish, ask your manicurist for a water based nail polish instead. 3. A gel manicure and acrylics are the same. Not the same. While acrylics last longer and are less expensive in some places, gels tend to be easier to apply and better for your nail bed, leading to healthier nails. 4. Gels can be easily removed at home. Not quite, while gels can be removed at home, it's time consuming and easy to mess up, having it removed at a salon will only take about fifteen minutes. 5. Cuticles should be cut back regularly. Not s good idea at all. This bit of skin is a barrier to bacteria and fungus, cutting them aggressively can increase your risk of infection, as well as make cuticles grow back thicker. Instead, soak them in warm water, then apply a bit of oil and gently push them back with a cuticle pusher, or for your safest bet, wait for your next salon visit and have a professional do it.
