Why Do Nails Chip, Split and Peel?

Posted: October 11th, 2017

Fingernails can become dry and brittle and begin chipping and splitting for a variety of reasons. Washing dishes frequently and using nail polish remover often can cause nails to dry out. Fungal infections and hypothyroidism can cause cracking and splitting. Trauma to the nail can cause peeling.   To prevent chipping, splitting, and peeling, fingernail care is important. Cut nails straight across with nail clippers and file them with an emery board to prevent snags. Keep your nails clean and dry and do not bite them. Biting fingernails can cause infections and damage. For fungal infections, use tea tree oil, a remedy for nails with has anti-fungal and antiseptic properties.   During a manicure, use fingernail lotions after using nail polish remover. Hand lotions work great as fingernail lotions. Just rub the lotion in the each nail. Coconut oil is an effective remedy for nails. It works as a great moisturizer and prevents nail infections.  When giving yourself a home manicure, be sure to use a non-acetone nail polish remover. After cutting and shaping the nails, soak them in warm water with a small amount of face cleanser for three minutes. Next, moisturize the nails with lotion or cream. Next, paint the nails with two to three coats of nail polish, allowing the nails to fully dry between coats. Adding a clear basecoat and topcoat can extend the wear of the nail polish. The final step after the nail polish is completely dry is to moisturize once again.   Healthy living is important in order to have strong, healthy nails. Exercise, eat a balanced diet and take a multivitamin containing vitamin B-12. Healthy living and proper fingernail care are essential for maintaining nail health.
