Why Exfoliating Your Skin is Healthy and so Important

What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation describes the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Dead skin cells can be removed via chemical or physical means.
How is it healthy?
Dead skin cells can build up if left to their own devices for too long. This build-up then forms a "barrier" between old cells and new cells. Dirt, oil, and other irritants can become trapped beneath this barrier and cause blemishes and acne. Removing the old cells on a regular basis can help you have fresh and healthy skin.
How often should you exfoliate?
Although you should exfoliate your skin as part of your regular skincare routine, the definition of "regularly" will vary from person to person. Some people have oily skin that is prone to exfoliating fairly often on its own, while others have dry skin that needs a little more tender love and cares to stay fresh and healthy. Most experts recommend starting with a minimum of 2 to 3 times per week. Ask an esthetician at your favorite day spa if you're not sure what's best for your skin type.
When should you exfoliate your skin?
Your skin is on the defense during the day. But much like the rest of your body, it lets its guard down at night because most of its stressors are gone. This allows your skin to focus on regeneration, which makes the morning after the perfect time to exfoliate any old skin cells that may have gotten left behind.
Is seasonal exfoliation important?
While skin thrives during the spring and fall, it tends to dry out during the winter and summer. Be sure to give your skin extra attention at the beginning, middle, and end of summer and winter to keep it in tip-top shape.
