This acid is the best way to exfoliate the skin. It removes the outer layer of dead skin cells from the complexion, leaving a fresher, brighter skin. The acid is routinely included as an ingredient in products used for reducing signs of aging, discoloration of the skin and to treat scarring.
What is Glycolic Acid?
This acid became a popular ingredient in facial skincare products in the '90s. It was the first effective product that was affordably priced, did not require a visit to the day spa, the assistance of an esthetician or the use of anesthesia.
The acid was either used in a skin peel product or made an ingredient in take-home skincare creams and lotions. The acid derives from sugar cane and is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), also known as fruit acids that are found in foods.
What are the Benefits of Glycolic Acid?
It improves the texture and tone of the skin, helps create new skin cells and generates a brighter more radiant complexion. Of all the AHAs, these acids have the smallest molecules; they are the most active, are bioavailable and therefore are the easiest to penetrate the skin.
Why is Glycolic Acid Good for the Skin?
The benefits of this acid include exfoliation and rejuvenation of the skin and stimulation of elastin and collagen production. When used continuously, the acid speeds up skin healing and decreases the signs of environmental skin damage such as sun and pollution.
Caution should be exercised, however, because the acid is very potent. Dryness and skin sensitivity to the sun is increased, so daily use is not recommended. At most, it should be used twice a week. Daily application of a good sunscreen is also recommended.
